Canada achieved a historic triumph over Ireland with a 12-run victory at the Nassau County Cricket Stadium in New York on Friday during the ICC T20 Cricket World Cup 2024.
Batting first, Canada posted a total of 137 for the loss of 7 wickets, thanks to Nicholas Kirton’s impressive 49-run innings. Irish bowlers Barry McCarthy and Craig Young took two wickets each, helping to restrict Canada’s score.
Ireland started well with a 26-run opening partnership. However, after skipper Paul Stirling was dismissed in the sixth over, the Irish innings faltered. Despite Mark Adair’s 34 and George Dockrell’s unbeaten 30, Ireland struggled to maintain momentum.
Canadian bowlers Jeremy Gordon and Dilon Heylinger took two wickets each, playing crucial roles in securing the win. Ireland’s innings stalled between the sixth and 15th overs, failing to hit a single boundary during this period.
From a challenging position of 59-6 in the 13th over, an Irish victory seemed unlikely. However, a 62-run partnership between Dockrell and Adair provided some hope. Needing 17 runs off the last over, Adair was caught after scoring 34, leaving Dockrell with too much to do as Gordon (2-16) successfully closed out the game for Canada.
Ireland posted a total of 125 for the loss of 7 wickets. This loss puts Ireland on the brink of elimination from the T20 World Cup. They must win their remaining matches against Pakistan and the USA and hope for favorable results in other games.
Canada’s victory is their most significant in an International Cricket Council tournament since defeating Bangladesh at the 2003 World Cup.
