Statistics Canada reports that the nation’s population exceeded 41 million in the first quarter of 2024, marking a growth rate of 0.6%. By April 1, the population stood at 41,012,563, reflecting an increase of 242,673 individuals within the first three months of the year.

This population boost was largely driven by the arrival of 121,758 immigrants during the first quarter. Additionally, net emigration for the period was recorded at 12,613 people, indicating a slight outward migration.

Furthermore, the country saw an influx of 131,810 non-permanent residents, contributing significantly to the overall population growth. Statistics Canada highlighted that the majority of this temporary immigration occurred before the announcement of upcoming caps on permits for non-permanent residents, set to take effect in 2024.

The surge in population underscores the effectiveness of Canada’s immigration policies, aimed at fostering economic development and cultural diversity. As the country continues to grow, policymakers will focus on sustainable strategies to manage this influx and ensure the prosperity and well-being of all residents.
