The Edmonton Oilers have defeated the Florida Panthers 5-3 at Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise on Tuesday night in the pivotal Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final bringing the series to 2-3 in favour of the Panthers.
This is the second win in a row for the Oilers after having lost the starting 3 games of the finals, and is nearly an impossible comeback. Only three teams have ever forced a Game 6 after losing the first three games of a Cup Final series: the 2012 New Jersey Devils, the 1945 Detroit Red Wings, and the 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs.
First Period
Connor Brown wearing No. 28, intercepts a D-to-D pass, pushing it past Barkov and breaking away. He slides the puck around the outstretched Bobrovsky, giving Edmonton a 1-0 lead. This marks the Oilers’ second shorthanded goal of the series and their third in the 2024 playoffs.
Second Period
Bouchard winds up for a powerful shot, and Hyman tips it in, beating Bobrovsky on the blocker side. It’s Hyman’s first goal of the series and Edmonton’s second power-play goal, the first at five-on-four. The Oilers extend their lead early in the second period to 2-0.
Bobrovsky loses his angle along the goal line, and McDavid capitalizes, banking it off the far skate and through the five-hole to make it 3-0 Oilers! The play began with a superb over-the-top pass from Bouchard to Foegele, who then passed it to McDavid for Edmonton’s third goal.
Holloway fails to clear the puck before Evan Rodrigues passes it past Philip Broberg to Matthew Tkachuk, who beats Skinner over the glove. The score is now 3-1.
Just 14 seconds after Edmonton regains a three-goal lead, Rodrigues finishes off a goalmouth scramble. The score is now 4-2.
Third Period
The Panthers close the gap to one goal. Tkachuk feeds Ekman-Larsson from below the goal line, and he fires it top shelf. The score is now 4-3.
And McDavid scores! It’s 5-3 for the Edmonton Oilers!
What’s Next: Game Schedule
