Today at the IIHF Men’s Hockey World Championship prelims team Canada struggled to win over Austria, finally taking the game with a 7:6 score.

By the end of the first period Canada had a clear lead with a 3:1 score, with Cozens, Guhle and Byram having scored, with Austria having retaliated by a lone goal by Nissner.

Eventually Canada was completely dominating over Austria until the end of the second period, with a seemingly clear win of 6:1, with the next goals delivered by McCann, Bedard and Dubois.

However in the third period the Austrians confidently took the initiative into their hands, having tied the score to 6:6 with 5 goals in a row scored by Baumgartner, Schneider, Zwerger and Rossi.

In the last minute of the third period the Austrians substituted their goalie for a field player, hoping to finish the game in their favour, but no goal came despite the continuous pressure on Canadians.

In OT period, John Tavares scored the game winning goal, landing the game for a win for team Canada.


So far team Canada stands undefeated in its group A in IIHF Men’s Hockey World Championship, having taken over Britain, Denmark and now Austria.

The next preliminary group game that Canada will have is slated on May 16th against Norway.
