Salmonella is a bacterium that can lead to symptoms such as diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps. While most people recover without medical intervention, severe cases may require hospitalization. Those most vulnerable to severe illness include the elderly, infants, and individuals with compromised immune systems.

Salmonella is dangerous primarily because it can cause severe gastrointestinal illness in humans. Symptoms include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps, which can be debilitating, especially for vulnerable populations like children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. In some cases, Salmonella infections can lead to hospitalization or even death. Additionally, Salmonella can contaminate a wide range of food products, posing a significant risk to public health if not properly handled or cooked.
