The annual Canada Day 2024 parade in Montreal has been cancelled just two weeks before the event, citing excessive bureaucratic hurdles from the city administration, according to Global News.
Organizer Nicolas Cowen, who has been managing the parade since 2015, stated that the decision was made due to an inability to guarantee public safety amid a shortage of volunteers and security staff, compounded by issues with filing paperwork and obtaining necessary licenses. The July 1st event, which was highly anticipated, will not take place this year.
Cowen attributes the cancellation primarily to the City of Montreal, criticizing the overwhelming and complex regulations he encountered at every step. Additionally, he cited the extensive construction work in the city’s downtown core, particularly on Saint-Catherine Street, as a significant obstacle. “There’s too much red tape,” Cowen said, explaining how the roadwork forced him to seek an alternative route, which ultimately proved too challenging. “At this point, I’ve decided not to go ahead,” he added, expressing his disappointment with the process.
This is not the first time the Canada Day parade in Montreal has faced cancellation. The event was previously called off in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2012, the parade was also cancelled because of a lack of funding and organizational support.
Despite the parade’s cancellation, other Canada Day festivities are still planned for 2024 in Montreal. The city will host various celebrations, including concerts, fireworks, and family-friendly activities at the Old Port and other locations. These events aim to capture the spirit of Canada Day, ensuring that Montreal residents and visitors can still enjoy the national holiday.
