The City of Calgary has officially declared a State of Local Emergency in response to a severe water main break that has significantly impacted the city’s water usage and distribution. This emergency status enables the city to mobilize and direct resources more effectively to address the urgent repairs needed.

Extended Repair Timeline

Initial estimates for the water main repairs have been extended due to the discovery of additional damage. The repairs, initially expected to be completed sooner, are now projected to take an additional 3-5 weeks. This extended timeline is necessary to address the extensive damage identified upon further inspection of the critical water feedermain.

Repair Efforts and Logistics

Repair work is actively underway, with city crews conducting thorough site inspections at various locations requiring immediate attention. Replacement pipes have been ordered and are currently en route to the repair sites. The city is prioritizing these repairs to restore the water main and ensure the stability of the water supply system.

Impacted Areas and Closures

Several areas in Calgary have been closed to facilitate repair efforts and ensure public safety:

  • Shouldice Park: All playing fields, pathways, and roadways within Shouldice Park are closed until further notice to allow for comprehensive inspections and repair work.
  • Edworthy Park: Sections of the north side, including pathways and the north parking lot, are also closed to the public.
  • 16th Ave N: This major roadway is closed at Home Road, impacting traffic and accessibility.

Water Restrictions and Safety Measures

Due to the critical nature of the water main break, the following restrictions and safety measures are in place:

  • Mandatory Stage 4 Outdoor Water Restrictions: These stringent restrictions aim to conserve water and prioritize essential usage. Residents are advised to adhere strictly to these restrictions to support the city’s efforts in managing the water supply effectively.
  • Fire Ban: A fire ban has been implemented to reduce the risk of fire hazards and ensure the safety of the community during this period.

Duration of Restrictions

The current water restrictions are anticipated to remain in place for the duration of the repair period, estimated to be 3-5 weeks from June 14. The city will provide updates as the situation progresses and as repairs are completed.

Despite the disruptions, the city’s water remains safe to drink. There are no concerns about the quality of drinking water.
