In light of rising tensions between Israel and Hezbollah along the Lebanese border, Canada is preparing for what may become its largest evacuation operation to date, aimed at protecting approximately 45,000 Canadian citizens currently in Lebanon.
Hebrew media outlet Channel 12 reported a tense exchange between Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly and Israeli counterpart Israel Katz, during which Joly emphasized Canada’s serious concerns and the deployment of military forces to the region to facilitate the evacuation.
This conversation underscored Canada’s proactive stance amid fears of a full-scale war between Israel and Hezbollah. Katz urged Canada to pressure Iran, Hezbollah’s main supporter, to mitigate the escalating conflict.
“The window of opportunity is closing,” Katz warned, highlighting Israel’s unease with the security threats along its northern border and the potential displacement of residents due to Hezbollah’s activities.
While evacuation plans for Canadians in Lebanon are advanced, it remains unclear if similar measures are being taken for the roughly 35,000 Canadian citizens in Israel.
Recent Tensions Between Israel and Lebanon
Tensions between Israel and Lebanon have been escalating, with increased military skirmishes and hostile rhetoric. The conflict has primarily involved exchanges of fire between Israeli forces and Hezbollah militants. The situation is further complicated by Hezbollah’s ties to Iran, leading to broader geopolitical implications in the region. The volatile border has seen frequent clashes, raising concerns about a potential full-scale conflict that could draw in neighboring countries and impact regional stability.
Canadian Citizens Living in Lebanon
Approximately 45,000 Canadians reside in Lebanon, many of whom have dual citizenship. The Canadian government has consistently advised caution, given the country’s political instability and proximity to conflict zones. Canada’s embassy in Beirut plays a crucial role in providing support and information to its citizens. In light of the current tensions, Canadian authorities are prioritizing the safety and evacuation of their nationals, demonstrating the government’s commitment to protecting its citizens abroad amidst escalating regional conflicts.
